India to Provide additional 80 MW power to Nepal

2016 has been extremely tumultuous for India Nepal relations due to controversy over constitutional reforms in Nepal which led to vehement opposition of Madhesi groups that forms a size-able chunk of Nepal’s population. Shri Janardan Sharma, Minister of Energy, Government of Nepal, recently visited India and held discussions with Shri Piyush Goyal, Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Power, Coal, New & Renewable Energy and Mines, Government of India. A request was being made from Mr.Sharma to India to provide an additional 80 MW power to Nepal as they are facing power crunch due to seasonal reduction in supply from domestic hydro projects in winter months. Swift arrangements were made and by the start of the new year an additional 80 MW of power will be supplied to Nepal which will increase the total power export from India to Nepal to 400 MW. This information can be particularly used as a fact in Mains answer writing of IAS/PCS.
