In yet another step towards creating a cashless economy in India, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has launched Aadhaar based Mobile Payment application named as BHIM APP – Bharat Interface for Money. This announcement was made at the Digi Dhan Mela Event at New Delhi in the Talkatora stadium.
It is being said that BHIM App is renamed modified version of the United Payment Interface(UPI) and Unstructured Supplementary Service Data(USSD). The step is taken to increase the usage of smartphone for authenticating payments and reduce the conventional importance of Credit Card/Debit Card and Point of Sale Machines. This technology has the potential to curb the risks associated with theft/misuse dangers of cards and POS machines usage. It will also remove the fees that are charged from Card Holder individuals and businesses which is a discouraging factor in accepting online payment methods.
How to Use the App –
The Aadhaar Merchant app have to be installed by merchants on their smartphones. These smartphones would be connected to a biometric reader. The person making payment will first enter his Aadhaar number and then authenticate the payment through his biometric credentials. His biometric credentials will work as the password here. The best fact about this system is that the person who is making payment need not have any smartphone for making the payment.
